This scan looks into the presence of identities that define themselves as ‘Colabs’ in North America, especially those that share our focus on social and environmental initiatives. For the purposes of our research, we define a collaboratory as a physical and/or virtual space for scalable research collaboration. The term Colab is popular online—with over 400, 000 hits on Google—and has several meanings and applications. It is consistently associated with creativity, collectivity, and future-thinking, no matter what field it is trying to occupy. Many Colabs are self-described incubators, hubs, or tanks, with a shared vision of connecting multiple sectors and diverse groups of people.

The table below shows Colabs (plus some partnerships, group learning initiatives, and groups that resist classification) that are relevant to our own sustainability focus.
